Monster Truck Extravaganza! April 16, 2010
The weather was gorgeous. We had about 14 other kids running around for his party They absolutely had a blast!
We started out with them just playing on our swingset and Aidan’s birthday gift from us – the trampoline!!
After the kids played for a little while, we had a Monster Truck race. I must admit, I was a little bit crazy and made 15 monster trucks for each kid out of cardboard boxes. It took way longer than I imagined, but they came out great and all the kids seemed to love them. It gave them something neat to go home with too.
I set up a track in the front yard with race flags and we put some boards down for them to jump over, like monster trucks. They raced, two-by-two to the finish line. It was so much fun watching it.
Birthday Cake Cupcake Cones April 12, 2010
It was Aidan’s big fifth birthday this past weekend and boy, was it a fun weekend!
On Friday, I took off work to get ready for his party on Saturday and to also bring in cupcakes for his preschool class. Instead of the traditional, normal cupcakes I decided to try to make ice cream cone cupcakes. The teacher said that all the kids just loved them.
You get regular ice cream cones and fill them with cake batter. Mine didn’t rise as much as I would have liked, so I suggest filling them a little more than 3/4 way up the cone. Another trick, to get the cones to stand up in the cupcake pan, it is helpful to put aluminum foil around it to hold it steady.
Then you just bake at 350 for about 20-25 minutes. The batter will rise and come up over the cone like a cupcake (or to look like a scoop of ice cream). You then ice as normal and voila – ice cream cupcake cones! They are a lot of fun to do and eat!!
More on the birthday weekend later 🙂
Garden Project April 8, 2010
When I first started this project, I did not realize how much work and time was going to be needed for it. After a few intense evenings of working on it and some much needed help from my dad, it’s all done!
This hill is on the side of our house leading back towards our back patio and basement doors. The hill is pretty steep and after Aidan tried to ride his bike down it one too many times, I decided something needed to be done with it! So what else but — a garden!!
This is what we had to start with (as you can see, it’s pretty ugly):
I really did not realize how hard it is to tear out grass and smooth everything down. I definitely got my exercise and did some stomach tightening with that part of it!
I bought several plants that lay low and spread wide so that they will eventually cover the bottom portion of the hill.
I finally planted everything last night and I’m very happy with the end result! Don’t mind the hose coming out from our drain pipe – I’ll be buying more mulch to cover it all up. 🙂
I love daisies!
This is from my garden out in the front of our house. I just love the bright color of these azaleas! They have really all come out in beautiful blooms!
And, lastly – these are some blooms from my Bradford Pear tree that I planted on the side of our house. I think these trees are just gorgeous when they get bigger. I want to get a few more to plant around the house as well.
Easter Weekend April 6, 2010
We had such a good weekend. The weather was gorgeous and we spent the majority of it outside.
On Saturday I took A to an Easter Egg hunt. It bothers me when you go to an Easter Egg Hunt and all they do is spread about a thousand eggs all over the grass – back to back. That’s how this one was. All the kids had to do was run around and grab as many eggs as they could off the grass. I think it’s no fun that way. This “hunt” (if you can even call it that) lasted MAYBE 30 seconds. It was like a swarm of kids just grabbing. I like the old fashioned egg hunts where the eggs are actually hidden. I think that way it’s more fun for the kids to actually try to find them and it makes the hunt last longer. I wish I would have thought to take a picture of the ground before the kids attacked it.
Later that evening we went to a friend’s house who owns an Easter bunny costume. She does it every year – dresses up and lets kids come over that she knows to get up close and personal with the bunny. In the past few years, A has been a little scared of the bunny, but this year he had no issues. He was hugging it and had no problem shaking it’s hand (paw?).
Sunday, after church we dyed Easter Eggs. I went to eat one afterwards and I must not have cooked them right… Yeah, I know, how hard is it to cook a hard boiled egg?? Well, I guess it’s not that simple because I messed every single one of them up. The middle was all squishy and this really strange bright yellow color – not normal at all. Then the white was a little mushy feeling too. YUCK. Needless to say – I had to toss them all 😦 I left the dye out, so we might try for round #2 and see if I can’t do them correctly.
We did go to my grandma’s house Sunday for a late lunch, which was super yummy. I was so stuffed though – I could barely breathe! All in all, it was a great weekend. What are some of your Easter traditions?
Forgetfulness & things to expect April 5, 2010
It figures that I would forget my camera on the day that I wanted to post a bunch of pictures and updates on here.
Here are some things to expect and look forward to for this week’s updates:
- A and an Easter egg hunt
- A and I dying eggs
- The playground and trampoline enclosure project
- Updates to the garden and new trees being planted
- The creation of a new garden and all the work putting in a border and digging up the grass in that area
Overall, we had a really great Easter weekend though. The weather was absolutely gorgeous again so we spent most of it outside. We went to my grandma’s house for Easter lunch and I ate way too much food. It was so yummy though!
As far as exercising this weekend, it’s a pretty big fail. I did do a lot of gardening, so I guess I’ll count that, and A and I did take a nice long walk, but other than that we just took it easy. I also just bought the EA Active More Workout Wii game, thanks to a great coupon code, so I can’t wait for that to come in so I can try it out.
Ahhh, Spring March 30, 2010
It’s is absoultely gorgeous here and I couldn’t be happier. I am definitely not a cold weather type of girl. I cannot stand to be hold. There is not much that makes me happier than to have the sun shining down after a long, dreary winter.
I love the feeling of the sun on your skin and driving with the windows down and the sunroof open. It puts me in a good mood walking outside on those first few days when it really starts to warm up.
Here are some spring-y pictures to put you in a good mood on this Tuesday afternoon as well:
